Welcome to Sit Spot and
Nature Connection Practice
To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower.
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.
William Blake - Auguries of Innocence
Below you will find 28 ‘Sit Spot and Nature Connection Invitations’ and two ‘Wildcard’ invitation that you can substitute for another at any time if you want. These invitations are activities to encourage you to consciously engage with the natural environment around you — designed to heighten your sensory awareness and increase your nature connection. Here is some advice on choosing a Sit Spot location.
After each nature connection activity, take a few minutes to reflect on what you saw, heard, or felt, and consider how the activity has impacted you. This can help you to understand your experiences, appreciate the value of your practice and encourage you to continue building this habit. One of the best ways to ensure that nature connection becomes a part of your life is to track your progress. If you wish to complete a Sit Spot Journal you can download a PDF of the Sit Spot Invitations and a Reflective Journal that you can either complete electronically or print off and complete by hand. Or you can invest in a journal such as our bespoke Nature-Connection Journal that is ideal for this. Over time, you can look back to review how far you’ve come and reflect on any changes you could make to better connect with nature. This will also help keep you accountable and provide motivation to continue making outdoor exploration a part of your daily routine.
We would suggest that you start with the first invitation (‘The Sensory Inventory’) on your first day and the second invitation (‘Breathing and Slowing Down’) on your second day though, as they introduce you to the core parts of the practice of Sit Spot. But after that feel free to do them in the order suggested, try an invitation given for a different day, or save that invitation until another week! You might find that some invitations are better suited to certain times of day or weather conditions, and that’s fine. If you can vary the times of your Sit Spot this will enable you to appreciate how your surroundings change with the time of day, the light available and also the weather.
It is really important to understand that you don’t actually need to complete all the Sit Spot Invitations in 28 days, in fact you don’t need to complete each one at all. You can work through them at a pace that suits you and if the invitation for another day appeals to you more or is more convenient for you, then go with that.
It would be a good idea to at least aim to do your Sit Spot practice at least 3 or 4 times each week if you can. You might also find it easiest to aim for 10-20 minutes each time in the first week and try to build up to 30 minutes by the end of the challenge. If you have a timer on your phone or watch, you can set this for the length of time that you wish to sit, a that way you aren’t tempted to keep checking the time. Feel free to sit longer than the time that you set if you feel like it though.
Try not to be put off by the rain! As long as you’re dressed for it, sitting or walking in the rain can be great experience, but if it isn’t a great experience then don’t feel that you have to persevere. Going out just after heavy rainfall or a storm can really offer a lot for all your senses though.
