Grounding or earthing could be the anti-inflammatory antidote for modern man. It is one of the greatest kept secrets when it comes to our health and aliveness and only a small part of the scientific community really understands the concept. Once health professionals and others realize that grounding is especially important in preventing inflammatory illness, an incredible effect on public health will be realized. The breath of validation from previous published data and real-life testimonials is a testimony of the earth’s dramatic impact on healing the human body.

A previous article began to explore the concept of ‘Grounding’ or ‘Earthing’, especially ‘natural’ forms of grounding such as walking outside barefoot. Grounding, or Earthing, refers to practices that establish physical contact between the human body and the Earth's surface, facilitating a natural electric connection. This simple, although historically ancient activity has recently gained increased attention in integrative medicine as studies reveal its potential benefits for physical, mental, and emotional health. Grounding practices can involve walking barefoot on natural surfaces, lying on the ground, or using grounding devices indoors to simulate Earth contact​.

For most of human history, we have lived in close connection with the Earth. We walked barefoot, slept on natural materials like grass or animal hides, and worked outdoors, constantly in contact with the ground. This natural grounding, or earthing, allowed our bodies to maintain a connection to the Earth's subtle electrical field. The Earth carries a negative charge due to its abundance of free electrons, which can help neutralise positive charges in the body caused by modern-day exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and oxidative stress.

However, modern life has drastically reduced this connection. With the advent of synthetic shoes, tarmac, concrete, and high-rise buildings, humans have become increasingly insulated from the Earth's surface. Most people spend the majority of their day indoors, surrounded by artificial materials and electronic devices. Even when we are outside, shoes with rubber soles prevent direct contact with the ground, cutting off this vital electrical link.

It typically involves activities such as walking barefoot outdoors, lying on the ground, or using specialised indoor grounding systems during sleep or rest. It is based on the principle that the Earth's surface is an abundant source of free electrons. These electrons can neutralise positively charged free radicals in the body, which are linked to inflammation and oxidative stress. ‘Sleeping Grounded’

Grounding or Earthing pads or sheets can offer an easy way to reconnect with the Earth's natural energy while you sleep, making them a really rather efficient tool for improving health and wellbeing. These pads contain conductive materials that mimic the natural electrical connection that you would experience by walking barefoot on the ground. When connected to the grounding port of a standard electrical outlet or directly to the Earth outside (through a grounding rod), they create a pathway for the body to absorb the Earth's free electrons during rest.

One of the greatest advantages of grounding pads is how easy they are to integrate into your daily life. Sleep is already a natural and essential part of the day, so using a grounding pad does not require additional time or effort. By simply placing the pad on your mattress or under your bedsheet, you allow your body to benefit from the grounding effect for hours at a time, promoting recovery and balance. Many users, including myself, report improved sleep quality, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced overall relaxation, all while doing nothing more than resting.

My Personal Experiences

I have been a fan of grounding through walking barefoot in nature for as long as I have been practicing Forest Bathing. However, I became more interested in ‘sleeping grounded’ following a discussion with someone who said that they found it very beneficial. I bought a sleeping mat for my bed from Grooni Earthing as I was experiencing back pain and other things that disturbed me sleep, especially night sweats. These sleeping mats go under your usual sheet and connect to the Earthing system in your house through the Earth pin (the top one in the UK). You can get smaller ones that you can put your feet on (wearing just socks or in bare feet) whilst you sit working.

Whilst the back pain reduced gradually over time, the night sweats stopped completely after I started ‘sleeping grounded’ and have not returned. Spending a few weeks away from home over the last few weeks I have noticed that my sciatica has returned a little, but this may be because I was sleeping in a different bed and doing a lot of driving. People who swear by sleeping grounded often have a smaller ‘travel pad’ that they take with them when staying away from home in hotels.
